Whale Rider

At first, I didn't think this would be an interesting movie, but after watching it, I proved it to be otherwise. The movie is about a little girl named Pai who lives in a place where they have tribal leaders and many traditions. When Pai was born a twin, her brother died, taking her mom along with him. The problem about her being the only one who could become a leader of the tribe is that only boys can be a tribe leader which is sexist, the way I think about it. I think she wasn't valued because she was a girl and "couldn't be the chosen one". Pai's grandfather after seeing he didn't have a choice as to which leader he would pick, still didn't believe in Pai as much as Pai's grandmother did. Pai started sneaking around trying her best to participate in all the training with the boys. All the boys weren't "fit" to be a tribe leader, so eventually it was only Pai who could take on this role. Her grandfather didn't want to believe this, but later got convinced when Pai brought back the whale's tooth from the ocean, and then rode a whale so that it could lead all the other whales back to the ocean. I thought this was a very interesting movie and it really helps you to look at people's different cultures and backgrounds.
